48 HOURS IN: SINGAPORE

A flying visit with little to no expectations, here’s our 48 hours in Singapore.

STAY

Well located, super affordable (especially compared to our original dreams of staying at the Marina Bay Sands) with friendly staff who were always on hand to help. The rooms were basic but all we needed for a busy city stay.

EAT

(Maxwell & Newton)

Feeding into our love of street food from the people who do it best, these markets can be found all over town and we were lucky enough to have Maxwell’s on our doorstep. Here you’ll see a big ol queue for Tian Tian Chicken but don’t let this put you off, the hoards have been sent by the late great Anthony Bourdain so you know it’s a good one. We also ventured further out to Newton’s which you may recognise from Crazy, Rich Asians. Some say tourist trap but we still found it full of great food and character.

In true British style, we joined the queue without even knowing the brunch spot. Otherwise unassuming, inside is an open-air courtyard set against concrete walls and green climbers. Don’t leave without having the poached pear pancakes.

Still feeling the jet lag, we stumbled across acoustics coffee, boasting that simple Japandi decor with rattan benches that were calling our name.

Unfortunately closed when we paid a visit but one to check out for a spot of breaky.

DRINK

Conveniently located steps away from our hotel this multi-concept venue is spread out across 3 floors complete with dining hall serving 3-bun burgers, studio 1939 bar serving craft cocktails, topped with a tropical rooftop overlooking the shophouse rooftops of Chinatown.

Climb the stairs to the top and be met with a buzzy cocktail bar framed with stained glass windows and green marble counter top. Stay here for classic cocktails with an Asian twist.

Initially on the hunt for Gibson we stumbled across Live Twice which made us feel as if we'd stepped into a 70’s filmset with its mid-century design and ambient lighting.

Known to be one of Singapore’s best bars and it showed, with a two-hour wait for a table on Saturday night. We didn’t have it in us at the end of the night but he had a peak and it was lively and sleek as the popularity alluded to.
