FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER '24

We’ve made through the January blues by eating our way around London and starting the year as we mean to go on. With V-day on the horizon, here is where we’d want to be romanced, whether date night is fun and casual with street food or effortlessly cool with Shoreditch’s latest hotspot, we’ve also thrown in a wine bar for good measure.

Where we've eaten

Growing up in Persian-bejewelled North London, we were made up to finally try one of London’s most hyped haunts inspired by the same great cuisine but a little more our vibe. Of the hole-in-the-wall classics, our favourite plates included the aubergine dip and flatbread, lamb stew with crispy rice (ghormeh sabzi) and the chilli corn on the cob. Make sure to grab a counter seat overlooking the open fire kitchen and watch the chefs at work. With the alfresco dining area rammed in mid-January, you can take that as testament to how good the food is.

Where we've loved

We hinted at this new bistro in our last newsletter and can safely say we’ve found a new go-to. Think special occasion but none of the fuss and none of the stifling. Carefully styled with crisp white table cloths, dripping candles and clashing upholstery, it feels more like a long-standing institution than a new opening. What’s best is the menu, handwritten and minimal, celebrates British produce on a short and considered list. Among the bistro classics they are getting a name for their pies, which may say serves 2 but we say serves 1.5. Order their pie of the day and one of the smaller mains between 2 and you’ll leave happy and full.

Where's we're off to next

Music-led restaurants with on-display record collections and Spotify playlists is a micro trend we are here for. It’s what we loved so much about Caia in Notting Hill. Bambi, from the team behind Frank’s Cafe (the one with the iconic pink car park staircase), looks to be one of those places. A neighbourhood wine bar where music is front and centre, with tunes playing throughout and transforming later on with resident DJs on the decks until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays. The short menu features Italian-inspired small plates lubed up with natural, low-intervention wines.
