JANUARY NEWSLETTER '24

And just like that, Christmas is over, we’re into a new year and into the overdraft. This time of year is always a reflective one and we’ve had some time to look back on all the incredible restaurants we’ve visited in 2023 and miraculously condense it down to a top 10 list, but before we get to that, we’re first going to let you in on our favourite spots over the last month.

Where we've eaten

This fabulous oyster bar deserves the restaurant spotlight this month. Being his second seafood haunt after Michelin-star Cornerstone in Hackney Wick, Chef Tom Brown clearly has a flair for daring seafood in a relaxed atmosphere, and he nails it here with a focused menu of bold oysters and sharing plates. The cured cod, cuttlefish lasagne and spicy crab on toasted milk bread are all must-orders, as are the dressed oysters in fact. Sitting proudly on a corner of Commercial Street, dining is spread across two floors where the ground floor is mainly date-friendly counter dining and the basement area - far from the short straw, thanks to its proximity to the chefs at work via the open kitchen - has intimate tables and booths making it a great option for couples and small groups alike.

Where we've stayed

Making the most of the ‘crimbo limbo’ week, we spent two nights in the quaint village of South Petherton. With only a few photos on instagram to go off, we booked a room at the newly-opened Holm for a restaurant-with-rooms stay. The restaurant side of this property has been in operation for two years and is already a well-known foodie spot in Somerset. Their menu is inspired by seasonal and local produce, including bread and pastries from the bakery next door and meat from the butchers down the road, with low intervention wines stored in the former bank vault to complement. The seven bedrooms have only been open to book as of two months ago and are well worth the wait. Perfectly curated and well thought out, these scandi inspired rooms are minimalist yet cosy with arched alcoves, half linen curtains and plaster washed walls.

Where's we're off to next

A new offshoot from owners of Crispin E1 and Bar Crispin, Bistro Freddie has been on our list since it opened its doors late last year and has made it to others’ including Vogue and the Financial Times’ list of best London restaurants. Favouring unfussy British fare with a French wine list to match, we’ve got a table booked for later this month so no doubt it will be plastered over our socials soon!
